Why not visit a farm this September?

Friends of the Lake District's Farming Landscapes project has an action packed programme of events this month.

The £140,000 project is putting on a wide range of farm events including themed walks, opportunities to sample local produce, and activities for all the family, to promote the link between landscape, farming, and food.

All events are free unless otherwise stated, and there is no need to book, just turn up on the day unless otherwise stated. Come prepared for all weathers, walking boots or Wellingtons recommended.

Farming Landscapes events September 2010

Wednesday 8 September - 2pm
Howgills Farm Walk
Enjoy a leisurely walk through fields and fells overlooking these quiet dales with Harry Hutchinson of Uldale House. Learn about life as a fell farmer on this 400 acre farm that has rights on the neighbouring commons. Sorry but no dogs. Sunday 12 September - 2.30pm
West House Farm, Dearham
A warm welcome will await you at West House Farm - a modern dairy farm in the heart of the countryside. Hear about the pro-active work to enhance the environment on the farm and the steps taken to encourage wildlife including grey partridge and tree sparrows. Sorry but no dogs.

Thursday 16 September - 10.30am
Greystone House - organic farming in action
Enjoy a visit to this family run organic farm at Stainton near Penrith to see how farming and wildlife conservation come together. Learn how organic food is produced and enjoy a cuppa or a spot of lunch in the Lofthouse Tearoom.

Sunday 19 September - 1pm
Raisgill Hall, Tebay
Raisgill Hall is located on the edge of the Howgills. It is an upland dairy, beef and sheep farm with grazing rights on Tebay common. The farm has a long history - the Hall dates back to the 1600's and the Dunnings have been farming here for 5 generations. Come and hear their story.

Thursday 23 September - 2pm
Low carbon hill farming at Glencoyne in the shadow of Helvellyn
Join Sam and Candida Hodgson for a guided walk round their National Trust farm on the west side of Ullswater and learn about their low carbon approach to hill farming. Adults £3 and children under 12 £1.50.

Sunday 26 September - 2pm
Market garden and orchards in the Lorton Valley
Low Stanger Farm is a small lowland farm. It was used in the recent past as a stock raising and dairy farm. Come and see how part of it has been transformed into an organic market garden and orchard.

Yew Tree Farm, Coniston
Wednesday Walks at 10.30am
Beatrix Potter saved yew Tree Farm from the threat of developers in 1930. Take a leisurely walk and find out about the history of the farm and the Herdwick sheep and belted Galloway cattle who live there.
