Friends of the Lake District's annual hedge laying competition takes place at Strickley Farm, Old Hutton, nr. Kendal on Saturday 5 February 2011.
The competition encourages more hedge laying, helping to conserve stock-proof and wildlife rich hedgerows. Jack Ellerby, Friends of the Lake District competition organiser says: "Managing the land and producing food go hand-in-hand. Hedges and dry stone wall field boundaries form an essential ingredient in Cumbria's landscape keeping livestock in the right place, so it is important that we help to keep these traditional skills going." The event is one of six 'Grand Prix' competitions in the local Lancashire and Westmorland style of hedge laying. Entrants are invited for the competition and should have some hedge laying experience. There are four classes: for juniors/young farmers, novices, an open class for experienced hedgers and champion professionals.
