Friends of the Lake District is against the development of all three proposed major greenfield sites for new nuclear power plants along the west Cumbrian coastline.
The three sites are at Kirksanton (north of Millom), Braystones (north of Sellafield) and one next to the existing Sellafield plant.

We urge you to make your views heard by responding to the consultation. You can read the consultation documents and respond, at: https://www.energynpsconsultation.decc.gov.uk/nuclear/
Friends of the Lake District's policy does not oppose the principle of nuclear power. We look at each proposed development and all the associated infrastructure, such at National Grid connections and road access upgrading required, to assess what impacts it will have upon the landscape, local environment and local communities.
In principle we are opposed to two of the three sites - Kirksanton and Braystones. We will support the local communities who are fighting against these potential major developments. The Kirksanton group's website is: http://www.savekirksanton.org.uk/
In terms of the bigger picture the western views out from the Lake District National Park are critical to the setting of the National Park. Friends of the Lake District believe it would be wrong for these magnificent coastal and seascape views to be dominated by huge developments, and the associated new pylons and major roads which they would require. The stunning landscape of Cumbria is not only vital for tourism, but also our unique selling point to attract business investment and jobs, now and in the future.
The western facing valleys and fell top Wainwright peaks which look to the Cumbrian coast are too important for the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and other decision makers to disregard. We hope you will respond to the consultation and make your voice heard!
