New born lambs and sheepdog displays proves a star turn at Turner Hall Farm - Visit a farm this summer
Thursday, 07 July 2011 10:04

More than 40 people got a glimpse of the working life of a traditional Lakeland hill farm recently (on Sunday 26 June) at a Farm event at Turner Hall Farm in Seathwaite.

109_children_meet_new_lambTurner Hall is a typical Lakeland hill farm with over 1100 acres of land most of which is rough grazing for the traditional Herdwick sheep. Livestock on the farm includes 1200 breeding ewes, prize winning Herdwick rams, and 50 suckler cows. There is also a campsite on the farm which is popular with fell walkers.

Farmer Anthony Hartley and his wife Hillary are the fourth generation of his family to farm at Turner Hall, and as he showed the interested audience around the farm, they were able to hear first hand about life on a farm from someone who has lived and worked on the land all his life, and how integral farming is to the landscape we love. Those attending the ‘Farming Landscapes' event on Sunday were able to see the farm dog in action rounding up the sheep, and enjoy meeting all the animals. The children at the event were especially pleased to say hello to a new lamb born that very morning.

More events led by local farmers are being run throughout the summer around the county. They will involve a variety of farming activities and provide a chance to see first hand what life is like on the farm today.
