We are pleased to say that we have been successful in having our land at High Borrowdale, Mazonwath and the Helm accepted into the Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) scheme run by Natural England.
This is an agri-environment scheme where farmers and landowners are paid for undertaking conservation work. Running for 10 years, future work will include an extension to the hay meadow at High Borrowdale, plus tree planting at the Helm. Cattle and ponies will be the main focus of livestock grazing at the Helm rather than sheep and there will be further work on the boundary wall. At Mazonwath, one field will be improved for birds through managing the grazing to encourage curlew, lapwing and redshank. There will also be a project at the Helm to put up bat and bird nest boxes. Friends of the Lake District aims to be an example of good practice in how we manage our land. This funding will help us show how landscape and conservation work hands in hand. It will also provide opportunities for volunteers, who already hugely support us on our properties, with some new projects. |
