Come and join Friends of the Lake Distrct and the Campaign to Protect Rural England, North Yorkshire in walking Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk from 14 September.
In celebration of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) North Yorkshire's new Coastal Branch and of the 75th anniversary of the Friends of the Lake District, the two groups are inviting people to join them in walking one, several or even all of the stages of Alfred Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk. Devised by Alfred Wainwright, the 190mile walk passes through three contrasting National Parks: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors. The event will take place over a two and a half week period in September (14-30th September) allowing those who wish to complete the whole walk the time to do so in a leisurely manner. The walk has been broken down into fifteen legs starting at St Bees on 14th September and ending at Robin Hoods Bay with individual stages being between nine and seventeen miles. Alternatively groups and individuals can share the total distance walking their section of the walk over the two week period thus completing the whole route as a ‘team' in the two week period. David Clarke, Chairman of CPRE North Yorkshire said "We are keen to encourage as many people as possible from across North Yorkshire and the Lake District to unite in this organised event creating a real sense of ‘Community Pride.'" CPRE has a vision of a countryside whose foundation is a prosperous rural economy in which environmentally-friendly farming and sustainable tourism are integral elements. This will ensure that village communities and market towns continue to flourish. The charity is also looking to preserve the individuality of each landscape and the buildings within it are valued, and its beauty, tranquillity and biodiversity maintained. Finally the inevitable changes (many of which are required to meet the challenge of global warming) must continue to be controlled by a robust planning system. The charity is always happy to welcome new supporters and members. This event is open to everyone and more information can be obtained by calling (01765) 609167 or visiting www.cprenorthyorkshire.org For detailed information about the route of the walk day by day click here. |
