Rural Roads Seminar - Streets, Roads and the Public Realm, October 2006
In October highways experts from across the North West met in Kendal for a seminar organised with English Heritage and supported by Cumbria County Council on issues relating to road design. The seminar covered various aspects of road design and character, including offering alternatives to current thinking and included speakers such as consultants Phil Jones and Colin Davis. Several practical projects in Cumbria were highlighted, including traffic calming work in Clifton, near Penrith, town centre improvements in Ulverston and the importance road verges for biodiversity and cultural heritage. Richard Greenwood from Cumbria Tourism talked about how tourists drew their first impressions of the county from the nature of the local roads, stressing the benefits of reduced clutter and use of local material.
