Friends of the Lake District

Welcome to Rural Greens!

Rural Greens is a project to build capacity within rural communities across the county in helping protect, manage and enhance the green spaces in and around the places where you live. The project builds on the work we started last year in the Open Spaces, Green Places planning phase but this time we're being supported by Defra's Rural Social and Community Programme and Friends of the Lake District.

We're working with CALC who are helping us develop good links with Parish Councils; with Cumbria County Council's Rural Matters department and getting lots of help and information from the Neighbourhood Development Officer team; with VAC and their Rural Development Officers and of course with the FLD staff (policy, project and support).

As with the previous project we're focusing on the green spaces in or near to the towns and villages where you live. These might be everything from the local play area, to a more traditional registered Village Green or the grassy areas along the roads or becks.

The project started in January 2007 and runs to March 2008. In this time we'll be coming out to Neighbourhood Forum meetings, to Parish Councils and other local groups to have a chat about green spaces, particularly the ones near you and any concerns or ideas you have about those.
To help you help yourselves we'll be offering some workshops covering green space management themes such as how to work through the legalities of Village Greens and how to manage for a more diverse natural habitat. We'll make sure the workshops are short, relevant, at a place near you and have a good selection of local food and drink to help things along!

In addition Jo, the Outreach Officer, will be available to come out to your community and offer specific advice and guidance on what you're interested in doing with your green space.

Finally we'll be developing this web site and several booklets and other information resources on the green space management themes that are most relevant to people in Cumbria.
