Friends of the Lake District

About the Friends

Our Purpose

Formed in 1934 the Friends of the Lake District works  to  protect and  enhance the special qualities of the distinctive and inspirational  landscapes of the Lake District and Cumbria.

What do we mean by special qualities?

The county's landscape is a unique blend of physical and cultural characteristics. It possesses a diversity of environments: spectacular mountains and rugged  fells; pastoral and wooded valleys; and numerous lakes, tarns and rivers, many of which are of national  and international  importance.

The character of the area is reflected  in its human history, inspiring the personalities, life styles and  traditions of its people. Moreover the area's distinctiveness provides an important sense of place for local communities, who, along with many others, enjoy the freedom and tranquility which the long tradition of public access has provided.

How do we operate?

We are a membership organisation with supporters throughout Britain and abroad. We work alongside other organisations and local  groups to achieve  a stronger recognition of the contribution of landscapes to the well-being of the nation and of the need to protect them from the effects of damaging  developments.

We promote research to find sustainable solutions to countryside problems and encourage communities to take an active involvement in improving their local landscape by grant-aiding environmental projects. We represent the Council for the Protection of Rural England thoughout Cumbria.

What are our values?

We promote solutions for the long-term future of the Cumbrian countryside and aim to ensure that any change recognises the value of its natural and built environment. In doing so we seek to:

  • Widen the recognition, protection and enhancement of the special qualities of the landscapes of Lake District and Cumbria
  • Promote better access for all who wish to enjoy quiet recreation in the countryside
  • Widen the recognition of the role landscape plays in  sustaining local communities
  • Promote greater understanding of the role of landscape in enriching people's lives
