Volunteers take to the Helm

volunteerThe worst of the winter's weather kept away for the day recently while volunteers planted trees and collecting litter on Friends of the Lake District the Helm, near Kendal. Students from Birmingham University Conservation volunteers and joined Friends of the Lake District volunteers in planting hawthorn and rowan trees to increase the nature conservation and landscape interest of the site. They also carried out a litter sweep on the site collecting 15 bin bags of rubbish, and several more unusual items of rubbish including two wheels and a car parcel shelf.

Judith Moore, Policy Officer at Friends of the Lake District "The volunteers had a great day. Getting rid of the rubbish is important work as this is an important place for local people and it helps create a more pleasant environment for everyone to enjoy. A number of local people already regularly collect litter, so with a large number of volunteers it made it easier to collect."

The students from Birmingham University had travelled to the Lake District to spend the weekend volunteering. The Saturday had seen them hedge planting with the local community at Tebay. "It was great to work with the students," said, "their enthusiasm was infectious and we were very pleased that they had made the effort to come and join us over the weekend."
