Woodlands
Friends of the Lake District also own three areas of woodlands:
Hows Wood, Eskdale
Hows Wood was purchased in 1987. At the time, although it was a broadleaved woodland it had been underplanted with conifers tree. Since then we have removed the conifers and allowed the area to revert to native broadleaved woodland. A circular permissive path allows access to the wood and links with the rights of way network.
Halfway House
We also own two small plots of land adjacent to the B5343 to Great Langdale, near Brunt Howe. The eastern plot (NY352034), an area of approximately 0.216ha, runs from southern side of the highway, down to the lagoon of the River Brathay. It is largely scrub and trees, and frequently experiences flooding. The western plot (NY351034), an area of approximately 0.175ha, runs from the roadside wall down to a field wall/fence, to the north of the River Brathay. This is more oak woodland, and also includes a permissive footpath.
Mikes Wood
When purchased in 1993 the area was rough grazing land, but since that time has been planted to with native tree species to create a new woodland. The woodland is adjacent to Cumbria Wildlife Trust's reserve at Dorothy Farrer's Wood and a permissive path through the new plantation creates a circular woodland walk from Staveley joining woodland owned by the Lake District National Park Authority, Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the Woodlands Trust.
