Dry Stone Wallers prepare for Competition at Little Asby
Monday, 21 June 2010 10:43

Some of the best dry stone wallers in the region will re-build a dilapidated limestone dry stone wall at Friends of the Lake District's annual Walling Competition at Little Asby Common in the Orton Fells on Saturday July 3.

The competition takes place on the conservation charity's land at Mazonwath, Little Asby Common (between Tebay and Kirkby Stephen) and the competition wall marks the boundary of the common. The popular Wainwright Coast-to-Coast Path runs alongside.

Five classes of competitors - Open, Intermediate, Novice, Veteran and Young Farmer/Junior - will take down and re-build a section of locally distinctive limestone wall. Jack Ellerby, of Friends of the Lake District said:

"Our competition and the work of the Dry Stone Walling Association generates greater interest in this traditional craft, improves the skills base of local wallers and encourages new entrants into land based jobs. It is particularly fantastic that the young farmers class continues to grow in size."

Entrants are invited for the competition and should have some dry stone walling experience. Visitors are very welcome to come and watch. The event is free.
The competition takes place from 9am - 4pm. Mazonwath, Little Asby Common is signposted from the A685 Newbiggin-on-Lune, grid reference 686084.

Rory Stewart, the new MP for Penrith and the Borders, will be awarding the prizes. Local champion waller Steven Allen will judge the competitor's handywork.

For more information or to enter, contact Jack Ellerby on 01539 720788.

Unfortunately due to a lack of prior bookings the Our Green Space event at Great Asby on the same day has been cancelled. However, the well dressing plaques will still be on display at St Helen's well in the village and visitors are always welcome to look in the beautiful church where felt pew runners have been made by the community as part of the Our Green Space project and the Flora of the Fells programme.
The Three Greyhounds Inn in the village will be serving drinks and Sunday lunch as usual. Great Asby village has six registered village greens running the length of the beck.
