Scheme to Underground Wires in National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty |
|
This scheme was initiated in 2005 when OFGEM, the body that regulates the electricity market, agreed to provide an allowance for companies that distribute electricity to underground electricity lines in National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) in its fourth Distribution Price Control Review (DPCR4). The allowance provides money to underground unsightly electricity poles and lines in these highly valued landscapes.
There are 7 electricity distribution companies (sometimes referred to as DNOs) in all: • SSE Power Distribution, • CE Electric UK, • Scottish Power, • Electricity North West, • Central Networks, • EDF Energy networks, • Western power Distribution.
Each must consult with their local AONBs and National Parks to decide how best to prioritise the work. Friends of the Lake District works with the Lake District National Park Authority, AONBs, Electricity North West and United Utilities to ensure the scheme is a success in Cumbria and the northwest.
The current allowance runs out this year, but along with a number of other landscape conservation groups including the Campaign for National Parks and Friends of the Peak District, we've successfully lobbied OFGEM to continue the scheme until at least 2015 (the fifth Distribution Price Control Review - DPCR5).
