| The event is part of a regional ‘grand prix’ of five competitions in the Lancashire and Westmorland style of hedge laying. The competition has been run by Friends of the Lake District for three decades which has helped to rekindle this ancient craft. This year a new championship class of top hedge layers will lead the field. These elite hedgers who compete at the National Hedge Laying Competition will have to lay ten yards of hedge each. Jack Ellerby, Friends of the Lake District’s competition organiser says: “We should be proud of the amount and quality of hedge laying in the Westmorland and North Lancashire area. Our local hedgers’ and landowners are doing a magnificent job conserving and maintaining thick, healthy hedgerows which are an important feature in the fabric of our landscape.” Over 200 metres of laid hedge by nearly thirty competitors will be a fine sight for drivers as they go past on the A65. The judges will be local men Gordon Strickland and tenant farmer of the competition hedge Peter Edmondson. Entrants are invited for the competition and should have some hedge laying experience. There are classes for juniors/young farmers, novices, improvers, professionals and veterans. Spectators’ are welcome to attend and entry is free. |
